Meet our Live Online Data Science Team

Lara Kattan

Senior Data Scientist
Lara is constantly awe struck by how math and statistical models can so reasonably approximate the messy real world, and loves to share her passion for the theory.
Lara comes to Metis from McKinsey, where she worked with financial institutions on risk modeling. Prior to settling into the practical world of consulting, Lara received a master's from the University of Chicago, where she had the privilege of thinking about problems with no real-world implications. There her passion for unstructured thinking and novel problem solving were nurtured and she took the lessons learned with her into conference rooms and PowerPoint decks. The statistical and mathematical elegance of data science are what animate her the most, but she gets her biggest joy from demystifying the rigorous mathematics for all audiences. If forced to snap out of her mathematical reveries, she's probably doing yoga, riding a bike, or drinking too much coffee.

Alice Zhao

Senior Data Scientist

Alice, a Metis data science instructor, enjoys making complex things easy to understand.

Alice comes to Metis from, where she started as the company's first data scientist, supporting multiple functions from Marketing to Technology. During that time, she also co-founded a data science education startup, Best Fit Analytics Workshop, teaching weekend courses to professionals at 1871 in Chicago. Prior to becoming a data scientist, she worked at Redfin as an analyst and at Accenture as a consultant. She has her M.S. in Analytics and B.S. in Electrical Engineering, both from Northwestern University. She blogs about analytics and pop culture on A Dash of Data. Her blog post, "How Text Messages Change From Dating to Marriage" made it onto the front page of Reddit, gaining over half a million views in the first week. She is passionate about teaching and mentoring, and loves using data to tell fun and compelling stories.

  • Who can apply to the live online bootcamp?
We are currently able to accept applicants for the live online bootcamp from only the following states: California, New York, and Washington. We are working quickly to gain approval in the remaining states and will keep the list up to date here. If you’d like to receive an update from our Admissions team when we receive approval to accept applicants from your state, please email [email protected]
  • Can you describe the live online bootcamp experience?
The live online bootcamp mirrors the on-campus student experience, except that it will be held virtually using Zoom. Instruction will be delivered in real time with live simulcast lectures. Students will interact with their Instructors, Teaching Assistants and classmates using Zoom and Slack. Lectures will take place in the main zoom room, and breakout zoom rooms will be used for live online students to collaborate during pair programming exercises and for 1:1s with their Instructors and Teaching Assistants.
  • What are the hours for the live online bootcamp?
The mandatory hours for the bootcamp are 9 am - 2pm CT, inclusive of a one hour lunch break. Students are expected to be present in the Zoom room and ready to participate every day Monday - Friday during these hours for 12 weeks.

From 2-5 pm CT, students will work on the required projects with the assistance of Instructors and the Teaching Assistant and may also join occasional afternoon lectures. While not required to be logged in after 2 pm, it is imperative that students spend time working independently on their projects each day and during the time instructors are available to assist in order to be successful in the program. Teachers and Teaching Assistants will be available until 5pm CT to answer questions and help students stay on track.
  • Is the live online bootcamp comparable to the on-campus bootcamp?
The live online bootcamp is accredited and offers the same curriculum, project work, instructors and career support as the in person bootcamp. Online students will also receive a certificate of completion upon graduation and career support until they’re hired.
  • Is there a part-time option of the live online bootcamp?
There is not a part-time option available at this time. Students are required to attend full time Monday-Friday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm CT, for 12 weeks. Students are also expected to continue working independently on their projects beyond 2 pm each day in order to be successful in the program.
  • What hardware and software do I need?
You will need a strong internet connection, a free Zoom account, and a computer. Your computer needs to run OS X and have at least 4GB RAM, 2GHz, and a 100 GB HD. Alternatively, if you are a Windows user and your computer is fairly powerful, you could run a Linux Virtual Machine inside your normal Windows install. This requires some configuration. We strongly recommend students to use a MAC.
  • As an online student, will I ever be required to come to campus?
Nope! The live online bootcamp will be completed without ever setting foot on campus.
  • What is the application process like?
Live online students will follow the same application process as the in person bootcamp. To see the full application process, please click here.
